Opinions Wanted: Cell Phone Providers

I need some help.  We’ve discovered during this repatriation thing that not everything is the way we left it three and half years ago.  For instance cell phone providers.  Cell phones (which was all we used to have, we didn’t have a landline) have gone through the roof in cost.  Maybe we are just used to what the costs are here.  I cringe at the price no matter what.
Either way between phone and cable and internet – that’s a big chunk of change.  We’ve gone since March without tv and it hasn’t been that bad actually.  Maybe we’ll continue with that and save the $100 a month.
Back on point:
Here we have Germany’s leading provider T-Mobile (did you know it’s a German company and headquartered in my little town?  Between T-Mobile pink and DHL yellow and red the town is a bit funny looking.)
But is T-Mobile good in the US?  Does it have good coverage in the Philly tri-state area?
The two main companies we are looking at are T-Mobile and Verizon.  If you have experience with either company (or another) can you offer up your opinions please?

  1. I don't have experience with either of those providers but so many of them will give you a free or heavily discounted phone if you sign a contract for a year or two. That really helps with the cost.

  2. I'm in the NY-NJ-PA area and have verizon. I like it because we package our phone/cable/internet/cell phones together. So if you need to do that, it's a decent deal. The service is pretty good but I find myself wanting a better phone that has an internet browser and they don't really offer one that I like. If you plan on getting an iphone you'll want AT&T.Good luck!

  3. Wow! Only 5 days left. Are you ready to go? Good luck with the move.I have Verizon here in Socal. Like Robin said, if you package or “bundle” all your services you can save a lot of money.Again, Good Luck!

  4. We have Verizon because it has the best coverage around here. Although since I'm in Idaho, that probably doesn't help you does it? 🙂

  5. I have T-mobil And LOVE it! I have unlimited minutes and text and internet for a mere $75.00 I don't think that is that bad. We have no land line now and love not having, don't miss it at all. Who misses telemarketers!! We realized the bundle thing really isn't that much of a savings, when no one uses the land line much. We have Direct tv (60.00), and then cable for our computer only. (40.00) We are waiting for the cable to expire and then actually we are thinking of Verizon Vios for both the tv and computer. But that is a couple months away. Not bundling we saved about $80.00 a month. So, check your options. Do you need a landline? Bundling for us was close to $200.00 and I still needed my cell phone. Cancelling the bundle and upping my cell minutes to unlimited for 20.00 was the way to go for me.Good luck!

  6. Oh forgot to say, I have used my T-mobil everywhere. Many states, and Europe never a problem. The farthest east has been FLorida or South Carolina. Not one problem. But I know the t-mobil internet site has a map that shows how good the coverage is in different areas.

  7. The good thing about T-moble is that you can use your German phone in both countries by simply replacing your SIM. I do it every time I visit the US.

  8. I had the worst service with T-Mobile here in Los Angeles… though I know it varies from area to area. However, I like that you can keep your number indefinitely with the pay as you go service!WOW – just 5 more days? Live it up!

  9. We have Verizon and we love it for cell service. We don't use them for cable and they've been a little pushy about trying to force us over but other than that… great reception and no problems.

  10. Of course I am not in your area…so I don't know that my opinion counts. My mom used to have Verizon and was not pleased. And a very good friend of mine here has TMobile. Because she's from Germany and needed a phone that would work when she goes home to visit. I know that she is quite pleased with the service she has here, too.
